Surfinfo originally started in the Fall of 1993 as a single page that showed just the Florida Buoys.
It gradually developed, hosted on penguin.marine.fit.edu and was used as a showcase for Florida Techs Ocean Engineering program. Serving a thousand files a month was a breakthrough!
In the Fall of 1995 Surfinfo moved into the roomier and faster home of InternetU - by this time surfinfo was up to several thousand files served a month and Florida Techs computer system couldn't handle the strain.
In the summer of 1996 Surfinfo started advertizing to cover costs, a tough decision, but the extra exposure this has given the site and the cash to buy new systems has definitely paid off.
In early 2000 Surfinfo was aquired by Swell.com - this meant a lot of internal changes, but the core of surfinfo - East Coast - all the time remained the same. Swell.com recognized this unique facet of the site and let us run with it!
Surfinfo now is the single largest surfing site on the web - with one exception - the fine folks at www.surfline.com have California at their fingertips!
We serve between 30 and 50 gigabytes of data a month, between 1 and 3 million files to an estimated 200-300,000 readership and have recently moved into the even roomier halls of Florida Online.

Surfinfo has always prided itself on a grass roots approach to surfing. No fancy graphics, no branching out into wierd and wonderful avenues - we concentrate on one thing - SURF. Forecasts, reports, conditions, cams, photos, that's it - nothing else gets a link.
Any off-site data is always given full credit and in most cases approval was gained before linking or use.
The new links page is a way to allow folks to add their own pages, but in a manner that is consisent with the surfinfo feel - down to earth, simple, east coast fun.
We generate a large portion of our data ourselves - and consider Surfinfo a web sink; click around on the web long enough looking for surf and you'll end up here.
Our logo was the result of a competition. Brian Brueck won a custom board for this nice clean piece of work!

Surfmail is hosted on a SunOS 5.3 SPARC LX
All web page design is done a Mac G3 Powerbook running MacOS 8.6 using Adobe Go-Live4.0, Adobe Photoshop 4.0 and BBEdit 5.2
Most graphics data processing is done using Imagemagick, GMT and a number of custom written programs running under UNIX.
All CGI and background scripting for surfmail, newsletters, the reports pages, forecast generation and so on, are custom written in PERL or shell scripts.
